We Make it Make Sense.

Every engagement is different. The institution is different, the moment is different, and what needs to shift is different.

But the work is always the same. We close the distance between where capital is going and where it needs to go. We do that through several entry points, depending on where an institution is and what it needs most.

SERVICES

Funding Strategy and Portfolio Design

Most grantmaking portfolios were built over time, not designed. They reflect relationships, history, and habit as much as strategy. We work with foundations and institutions to look honestly at what a portfolio is actually doing, where the gaps are, and how to restructure it around what the community actually needs rather than what has always been funded. This is not a program audit. It is a strategy conversation about what your capital is for and whether it is getting there.

Grantmaking Design

How you ask for information, what you require organizations to report, how long your process takes, what your guidelines signal about who you think belongs in the room: all of it communicates something to the field before you fund a single organization. We help institutions design grantmaking processes that actually work for the organizations doing the work. Less burden. More honest relationships. Stronger outcomes.

We also work directly with nonprofit and community-led organizations to help them navigate funder relationships honestly, build proposals that reflect their actual work, and communicate their impact without contorting their mission.

Philanthropic Staffing & Surge Support

Foundation teams are small by design. That works until it doesn't. A staff member goes on leave. A grant cycle accelerates. A funding surge creates program work that nobody currently has the capacity to execute. The options are usually bad: overload the people you have, delay the work, or hire someone who will spend the first month learning what your team already knows.

We maintain a bench of seasoned philanthropic professionals, former program officers, senior staff, and director-level practitioners who can step into foundation work without an onboarding period. They know how grantmaking operates from the inside. They know what good looks like. They know how to move in an institution without disrupting it.

We offer a curated group of experienced people who are placed with intention, matched to the specific moment you are in, and accountable to the same standards of care and integrity that govern all of our work.

Program Staff Development and Coaching

Most program officers learn the job by doing it. There is rarely a structured introduction to the craft, the judgment calls, the internal politics, or the unwritten rules of how good grantmaking actually works. People figure it out over time, or they carry the gaps quietly for years.

We offer coaching and development for program staff at every level. From a new program officer navigating their first grant cycle to a director building the strategic vision for an entire body of work. The support is tailored to where someone actually is and what they are genuinely trying to figure out.

This work is grounded in direct experience at every level of the program career path. Specific, honest, and practical to the real conditions of foundation work. We work with individuals and with full program teams, depending on what the foundation needs.

Organizational Culture and Capacity

Capital lands in organizations. How those organizations are led, how their staff is supported, how their culture functions: all of it determines whether the funding actually produces what everyone hoped it would. We work with institutions and their grantees to strengthen the internal conditions that determine whether resources translate into real results. Leadership alignment, decision-making structures, staff culture, and operational clarity. A well-rested, well-resourced, authentic organization can do things an exhausted one never can. We help build the conditions for that.

This work extends to the organizations in your portfolio. We work directly with grantees to strengthen the internal conditions that determine whether funding translates into real results. Better supported organizations produce better outcomes for everyone.

Board and Staff Retreats

Most retreats produce a lot of sticky notes and a document nobody reads. Ours are designed around what actually needs to shift. Alignment between board and staff. Clarity about strategy at a moment of transition. Honest conversation about what is working and what is not. Decision-making that the whole team can move from. We design every retreat around the real moment the organization is in, not a generic agenda.

Narrative and Cultural Strategy

How an institution talks about its work, its community, and its values sends a signal to every organization in its orbit. We help funders align their narrative with what is actually true about how they operate and what they care about. Not a communications refresh. A deeper look at whether the story you are telling matches the work you are doing. When it does, the right organizations find you. When it does not, everyone can tell.

Executive and Board Advisement

Sometimes the most valuable thing is a thought partner who knows this field, knows what you are carrying, and can help you think clearly about what to do next. We work alongside executives and board leaders, navigating complex moments. Strategy decisions, leadership transitions, organizational direction, governance questions. The kind of work that requires someone who can hold the full picture without having a stake in any particular outcome. Confidential. Direct. Grounded in the real conditions of the field.

Not sure where to start? Most of our engagements begin with a conversation, not a scope of work. Tell us what you are trying to do and what is getting in the way. We will tell you honestly whether and how we can help. hello@grantsandgrit.com or call 312-529-0779.
